UN report charges Israel with deliberate attacks on Gaza facilities

Israeli leaders are incensed over a new United Nations report which accuses the IDF of deliberately attacking UN facilities in Gaza during its three-week Operation Cast Lead that ended in January, while failing to mention relentless rocket attacks by Hamas on Negev communities. The report, commissioned by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, was provided to Israel in advance of its expected presentation on Tuesday to the Security Council. The UN examined events in which nine UN-run facilities were damaged during the IDF offensive against Hamas terrorists, leaving several dozen people dead. Israel's Foreign Ministry “rejected” the report, saying in a prepared statement that it is “tendentious, patently biased, and ignores the facts presented to the committee, [which] has preferred the claims of Hamas, a murderous terror organization, and by doing so has misled the world." The official response also noted that the report failed to take into account any of the exculpatory evidence Israel provided to the investigation team, and that an IDF internal investigation had already cleared the military of any intentional wrongdoing. Meantime, Ban has sent the Security Council a letter accompanying the report in which he essentially discredits its claims. Ban stresses the close cooperation Israel accorded to the inspection team and criticizes the firing of Kassam rockets at Israeli towns.
