Obama fed up with Israel and the Palestinians

Wednesday, January 06, 2010 Israel Today Staff

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said President Barack Obama is growing fed up with Israel and the Palestinian Arabs and their inability to reach a peaceful conclusion to the Middle East conflict, reported Israel's Army Radio.

Emanuel revealed the president's frustration during a meeting two weeks ago with Jacob Dayan, consul general of Israel in Los Angeles.

Emanuel said Obama is sick of Israel accepting suitable solutions months after they are put forward and thereby killing any momentum, though it could be argued that is a necessary consequence of a free and open democracy. As for the Palestinians, Emanuel quoted former Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban in saying they never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

The White House chief warned that if both sides do not shape up soon and make some progress toward peace, Obama is likely to significantly downgrade US involvement in the peace process. Ironically, that may be what both sides prefer. Israel is weary of constant US-led international pressure for it to make unconditional concessions, and the Palestinians want Europe and other nations more sympathetic to their cause to take the reins of the peace process.
