One of the highlights of my first trip to Israel was visiting a sight most tourists never get to see. The Hazon Yeshaya Soup Kitchen serves hot meals to the hungry. For many of these people it is the only hot meal they will get! I peeled potatoes beside those I had seen Israel with and also beside Israelis who were doing their weekly service in the soup kitchen. I also had the opportunity to dole out food to those who came to be fed. What an incredible end to a very fulfilling experience!

I could use words like super, awesome, fantastic and like 'wow man', but I'm not sure if that would capture the real meaning for me. To experience crossing the Sea of Galilee and walking around Capurnaum, knowing this is where our Saviour traveled and much of His ministry was centered around, many years ago, hit me in a way that I really haven't been able to completely explain, not even to myself. The closest words that I might use to express my feelings as we crossed the Sea of Galilee and Pastor John read the bible account of Jesus and His disciples is "an emotional joy and heart fluttering experience". Maybe it was the Holy Spirit granting me a renewed and even stronger love for our Wonderful Lord. Whatever the case, both Elizabeth and I are very thankful for the opportunity to see the Holy Land in person, and give all the credit to our Lord for making this possible.
When I read the bible now and read the word Jew, it brings to memory many things we saw and heard about the Jews on our trip, but with a much different meaning than just a little over a month ago. When I look up scripture in my bible and pass a page with a map on it, I stop and study it, not just look. I say to myself, this is where we actually were just a short time ago and Pastor John read the bible passage. The history we learned from our guide Ikie, was extremely enlightening and invaluable in understanding the Jewish persecution over all these years and how it is still going on.

I think seeing the modern with the very ancient sites really impressed me. Visiting so many places that had their roots in the Bible was one highlight and this brought the great book truly alive. Seeing what these people accomplished in the early times was so impressive and all the excavation going on sure brings the past to the present.
